Spirit

Spirit! acts as a sequel to the earlier musical 'Jesus Folk', picking up the story at the Ascension. Based on the first twelve chapters of the Acts of the Apostles, it vividly portrays the electrifying results of the Holy Spirit's presence in the early Church – the joy, power, and love released among the disciples. The musical is designed to be highly adaptable, suitable for both small and large groups, requiring minimal staging and costumes. The primary instrument for the backing group is the piano, with parts for brass and bass guitar also available.

The musical chronicles the events following Jesus' Ascension, beginning with the powerful arrival of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. It follows the early Christians as they experience 'a sense of awe', performing signs and wonders. The narrative depicts the challenges they face, including opposition from authorities, the apostles' arrest, their miraculous release, and bold defiance before the court ("We must obey God rather than men!"). It also explores the breaking down of prejudice, exemplified by the inclusion of non-Jewish figures like Cornelius and the Ethiopian eunuch. The story highlights the emergence of Stephen, a man 'full of faith and of the Holy Spirit', leading to his martyrdom, witnessed and approved by Saul. Saul then becomes an active persecutor, heading to Damascus, but experiences a dramatic conversion en route, ultimately being welcomed into the fellowship he once sought to destroy.
