There's A Rumour
Lyrics
There's a rumour! Not a word, we don't want everyone to know. Bill and Betty - getting married! Mr Jeffries in the butcher's told me so. She's a bad lot, not the sort at all to marry onto Bill, Wouldn't surprise me if it happened, if his father went and cut him from his will.
Lot of rubbish! Do be quiet. Ought to be ashamed, that's what you ought to be. She's a beauty, is our Betty, everything will be alright, you wait and see. Lot of rubbish! (What's that Father?) Do be quiet. (I would rather). It's unnatural, it's unlawful. (Now Alfred, don't be awful!, I'd not say it if it really wasn't so).
Shouldn't tell you, but I'll tell you - if you promise that you will not tell a soul. About Maurice, her old boyfriend? Magistrate has said he's quite beyond control. There's the youth club, yes the youth club. Is she fit to be the youth club leader's wife? As I told Bill, yes I told Bill, once you're stuck with her, you're stuck with her for life.
In the paper, did you see it? James the leader of the youth club has retired! Shouldn't say it, but it's true though - if he hadn't done he'd probably been fired. He's a good sort, a real Christian, but a bit long in the tooth you must agree. Could have told him, must get with it, no one else could do the job excepting me!
I've got secrets - I could tell you, I've got secrets I could tell you, they'd repulse, you they'd repel you, They'd excite you, they'd delight you, they're so hot! I've got secrets I could tell you, I've got private information, I could fill you with elation, but I'll not!
I'm just that kind of a person people tell their secrets to. I could tell you more, much more, but no, no, no, I won't!
From Now On
Lyrics
From now on - you will be starting anew, From now on - things will be better for you, The sun will shine and the shadows will melt away, And life will be gladsome again. From now on - you say goodbye to the past, From now on - you have a joy that will last, The birds will sing in a sky that is always blue And earth will be heaven for you!
(Girls to Betty) Hey, you! We're green with envy, it is true, Please tell us what we have to do To get ourselves a husband too.
(Boys to Bill) Hey, there! We've always told you to beware Of flashing eyes and floating hair, And now you fill us with despair!
(Bill) Is it going to be sad? (All) No, it's going to be glad! (Bill) Is it 'welcome despair'? (All) No, it's 'goodbye to care'! (Bill) Is it wretchedness? (All) No! (Bill) Is it happiness? (All) Yes - it's for richer, poorer, better or worse!
(Chorus)
And earth will be heaven, And earth will be heaven, And earth will be heaven for you!
What Shall I Ask For You?
Lyrics
What shall I ask for you, what shall I pray? Speaking to God for you, what shall I say? Shall I ask influence, shall I ask wealth? Shall I ask happiness, harmony, health? This I will ask for you: God grant each day Wisdom to know his will, grace to obey. This I will ask for you: God grant each day Wisdom to know his will, grace to obey; Wisdom to know his will, grace to obey.
If I could see for you what lies ahead, What you should greet with joy, what you should dread; I'd bridge the streams for you, fence every height, Life would be beautiful, burdenless, bright. Whate'er the future holds, this is my prayer: God who is with you here, be with you there! Whate'er the future holds, this is my prayer: God who is with you here, be with you there; God who is with you here, be with you there.
What Sort of God?
Lyrics
I belive that God is pure and that sin He can't endure, And the judgement I am sure, is no tale! I believe that God is just, and because of this He must Look upon us with disgust when we fail. He demands and he expects what is best, He refuses and rejects all the rest.
What sort of God is this God of ours? What sort of God, with what sort of powers? Knowing our weaknesses great and small, Gladly forgiving us when we fall. What sort of God is this God of ours? What sort of God, with what sort of powers? Just and holy - but first of all God is love, God is love, God is love, God is love, God is love!
I believe that God sees through To the heart of what we do, Sees the motive that is true - undeclared! I believe that he can see What is best in you and me, And the people we would be - if we dared! And he never quite despairs when we fall, He's forgiving and he cares for us all.
I Nearly Forgot To Say Thank You
Lyrics
Please may I pass my exams okay, Please may we soon have a holiday, Please help me climb up the chestnut tree, And don't forget about me! Please when I lose help me not to scream, Please get me into the football team, Please, we could do with a new TV, And don't forget about me! Amen!
I nearly forgot to say thank you For flowers and thrushes and things, For daisies that dapple the meadow And patterns on butterfly wings; For stars that shine, for winds that blow, The sun that melts the ice and snow; I nearly forgot to say thank you For rainbows that follow the rain, But really I want to say thank you Again and again and again!
Just ask and God will not refuse, But don't forget your Ps and Qs! For rainbows that follow the rain, But really I want to say thank you Again and again and again!
You Can't Stop God
Lyrics
Salvation Army Song Book (2015) No. 72
You can't stop rain from falling down, Prevent the sun from shining, You can't stop spring from coming in, Or winter from resigning, Or still the waves or stay the winds, Or keep the day from dawning, You can't stop God from loving you, His love is new each morning.
You can't stop God from loving you Though you may disobey him, You can't stop God from loving you, However you betray him; From love like this no power on earth The human heart can sever, You can't stop God from loving you, Not God - not now, not ever.
You can't stop ice from being cold, You can't stop fire from burning, Or hold the tide that's going out, Delay its sure returning, Or halt the progress of the years, The flight of fame and fashion, You can't stop God from loving you, His nature is compassion.
You've Got To Conform
Lyrics
You've got to conform to belong! We've all got to sing the same song! From this regulation there's no deviation, It's plain that we're right and you're wrong! You've got to conform to be in! And not to conform is a sin! Traditions have got to be strong, You've got to conform to belong; You've got to conform - or else, Got to conform - or else, Got to conform - or get out!
You've got to conform to belong! We've all got to sing the same song! There's no deviation allowed, It's plain that we're right and you're wrong! You've got to conform to be in! And not to conform is a sin! Traditions have got to be strong, You've got to conform to belong; You've got to conform, You've got to conform, or get out!
His Love Remains the Same (From the Mini-Musical)
Lyrics
Salvation Army Song Book (2015) No. 490
Don't assume that God's dismissed you from his mind, Don't assume that God's forgotten to be kind; For no matter what you do, his love still follows you; Don't think that you have left him far behind.
For his love remains the same, He knows you by your name, Don't think because you failed Him He despairs; For he gives to those who ask His grace for every task, God plans for you in love for he still cares.
Don't assume that God will plan for you no more, Don't assume that there's no future to explore; For your life he'll redesign, the pattern be divine; Don't think that your repentance he'll ignore.
How Much More (From the Mini-Musical)
Lyrics
Salvation Army Song Book (2015) No. 467
If human hearts are often tender, And human minds can pity know, If human love is touched with splendour, And human hands compassion show,
Then how much more shall God our Father In love forgive, in love forgive! Then how much more shall God our Father In love forgive, in love forgive!
To a God like this (From the Mini-Musical)
Lyrics
To a God like this we come with gladness, To a God like this, why should we hide? To a God like this we bring our sadness, By a God like this our tears are dried.
With a God like this, we'll face the future, For a God like this will set men free. And from this day on, we'll be His people, And from this day on our God He'll be, And from this day on our God He'll be!
Our God! Our God! He'll be!
What About the Children?
Lyrics
Man in his madness makes mistakes, and children have to pay. Tomorrow's sorrow we produced by failing yesterday.
But what about the children? The guiltless little children? The children have to suffer because of our mistakes. Let's think about the children, afrighted blighted children, And let's be better people for little children's sakes.
Man in his blindness blunders on, and little children cry, We have a right to please ourselves, that no one can deny.
My Mum
Lyrics
My mum is a marvelous mother indeed, And her attributes can't be compared, A marvellous mum and a marvellous chum, And she thinks I'm a marvellous child.
My mum! My mum! She thinks I'm a marvellous child, my mum!
She isn't an angel and she hasn't got wings, She can't be a queen without diamond rings, She hasn't got everything money can buy, Some things she can't do but she's willing to try. She's quick on her feet and she's good with her hands, She knows all about me but she understands, You know what I think after looking around, I wouldn't swap mum, not my mum! For a million pounds!
No child is angelic the whole of the time, Even I have been known to run wild; My faults she can see, but she's wild about me, And she thinks I'm a marvellous child.
Down the Street
Lyrics
I'm light-fingered Freddy, Before I went steady, I loved to be out on the job; I once went to Hexham, Perhaps it was Wrexham, To burgle the house of a nob. I'd just kind of climbed up the drain, And just kind of broken a pane...
Down the street comes the band of The Salvation Army, With trumpets, tabrettes and trombones, And they stay and they pray and they beat out their message In quite unmistakable tones; And it kind of takes hold of a man, In a kind of a way nowt else can, And you're glued to the spot if you like it or not, And you just kind of alter your plan; And you're glued to the spot if you like it or not, 'Cause you feel you're a new kind of man!
I once got a duchess Right into my clutches, And asked her to marry her Fred. She wasn't too handsome, But worth a King's ransom, And so I decided to wed. I'd just got her saying "I will", When over the brow of the hill...
For wanton destruction, Or was it obstruction? I found myself thrown in the jug. The wardens kept bawling, The food was appalling! I felt such a terrible mug, But least I'd escaped from the band! And the peace and the quiet was grand...
I dreamt I had died, And to heaven I'd flied, And Saint Peter spoke up with a grin, Fred, we've been alerted That you've got converted, And so there's no need to break in. Well I'd just kind of picked up my lyre, And taken my place in the choir...
Only People
Lyrics
We all prefer to classify the people that we meet, To stamp and label everyone as bitter or as sweet, But what's the use of trying to give everyone a name? For underneath the surface they are people just the same!
They are only people, only people, And our superficial judgments are all wrong; They are only people, only people, So why call them rich and poor, or weak and strong.
No matter what we call them in this label game, Underneath the surface, folk are much the same. They all need hope and faith these people passing by, They all need love, they all need God.
They are only people, only people, Only God our many wants can satisfy. They are only people, only people, People can find God if only people try.
"She's with it", "she's not got it", "he's just tragic, "he's a clown"; "They're awful folk", "they're wonderful", "they're up" or else "they're down"; "He's miserly", "he's generous", "she's gloomy", and "she's gay"; "They're stupid" and "they're clever" - oh, the foolish things we say!
It's wrong but we all do it, "he's bright", we say, "he's thick" "She's beautiful", "she's ugly" or "she's slow" or else "she's quick" These people haven't got a clue, these know what they're about "They're good", "they're bad", "they're gay", "they're sad" "They're in" or else "way out".
When God Came Down
Lyrics
When God was seen in Bethlehem, He came a perfect stranger, He wrapped himself in swaddling clothes, And laid him in a manger.
Whatever did they say to him? Did they kneel down and pray to him - Upon the cattle's hay, to him - When God was seen on earth? They had not quite expected him, They just kind of neglected him, You might say they rejected him When God was seen on earth, When God was seen on earth.
When God was seen in Galilee, He taught a way of living, He told them that the greatest wealth, Would come to them by giving.
Whatever did they say to him? Did they kneel down and pray to him - Or pass the time of day with him? When God was seen on earth? They made things kind of tough for him, The priestly folk were rough to him, And went off in a huff from him, When God was seen on earth, When God was seen on earth.
When God came to Jerusalem, His face was set on dying, To prove his love was no pretence, And he had not been lying.
Whatever did they say to him? Did they kneel down and pray to him? And give themselves away to him, When God was seen on earth? They bruised him and abused him, Misguidedly accused him, They hailed him and they failed him, And finally they nailed him, And on a cross impaled him, And not a soul bewailed him, And there - he died!
But love can never be destroyed, The grave could not restrain it, The love of God is like a sea, And nothing can contain it.
Whatever did they say to him? Did they kneel down and pray to him? And give their hearts that day to him, When God was seen on earth? They prayed him and obeyed him, And never more betrayed him, And King of their hearts they made him, When God was seen on earth, When God was seen on earth!
I Came to Him
Lyrics
I came to him, and that was all, I didn't cry, I didn't call; I simply stammered out my prayer - And God was there, And God himself was there.
I never dreamt such joy could be, I came to him, he came to me; I simply stammered out my prayer - And God was there, And God himself was there.
